Beryle Blue, Time Cop by Janet Raye Stevens Genre: Time Travel Mystery Release date: November 9, 2021 Her mission: Save the Soldier, Save the Future. Even If She Loses Her Heart Librarian Beryl Blue shelves books in her hometown library. Dull, but after a turbulent childhood, she prefers the mild life. Until a time cop from the future crash lands in her library with an offer Beryl isn't allowed to refuse: she must stop a rogue time traveler from killing a WWII soldier on leave and changing history forever. Before she can blink, Beryl is whisked to 1943 and stranded there, tasked with keeping Sgt. Tom 'Sully' Sullivan safe at all costs. Dealing with the bad guy is a piece of cake compared to the trouble Sully puts Beryl through. She's stunned to find herself falling for the sexy, stubborn Army sergeant, who makes it abundantly clear he can take care of himself. With a time traveling assassin on their heels and all of history on her shoulders, Beryl scrambles to figure out how to protect a man who refuses to be protected—and keep her heart intact. And that's not the strangest thing about the encounter, as Beryl soon finds out… "You need my help?" I said warily. "With what?" "Saving the world." Maybe Glo was hallucinating. "Sure. You can't ask me to find some overdue books. I have to save the world." "You're the only one who can." "Why? Somebody messing with the Dewey Decimal System?" Glo shot me a wise-ass scowl. "Worse. I'm security director for Time Scope Excursions in the year 2130. One of my team's gone rogue. Into the past. Specifically, 1943. He's bent on destroying the historical timeline. I need you to help us stop him." Yeah, she definitely was hallucinating. "Uh-huh." She reached into her bag and pulled out a tablet in a blush-colored case. "Here are my credentials." She tapped the screen and the light popped on. "You expect me to believe people are still using tablets a hundred years from now—" I swallowed my snark as a rainbow of pixels swirled up from the screen, settling like dust into a 3-D hologram of Glo in a drab gray uniform and a don't-screw-with-me frown. Text scrolled under the image, displaying her name and everything she'd just told me. She'd clearly gone all-in to try to convince me her delusion was real, including getting her hands on some amazing tech. "Now will you help me with this mission?" she demanded. Mission? Off. Her. Rocker. Maybe crashing through walls was her hobby and it'd done a number on her brain. "Depends." On whether she had a weapon in that bag. "Why don't you tell me about this…mission? Then I'll decide." I adopted an attentive expression as she poured out her story. Now, call me cynical. Getting kicked in the teeth by fate wasn't exactly a recipe for Pollyanna. Pardon me if I had trouble swallowing Glo's tale. Rogue time cop from 2130 out to kill GI Joe in 1943? Me, Beryl Blue, the only person in all of time who could stop him? Please. Something about my DNA being unmapped, but I didn't really pay attention. I only paid attention to how absurd her story sounded. Plus, a total rip-off. That time traveling madman bent on changing history thing had been done to death. But I humored her, letting her talk, as I scrambled for a way to get to my phone so I could call 911. "You're not listening," she said. "I am. Guy wants to kill John Sullivan for some nefarious purpose. I have to stop him. See? I'm listening." "No, Tom Sullivan." Big sigh. "I knew this wouldn't work. I told—" She cut off. "I'll just show you." She tapped on the tablet's screen. "Don't move." Note to self—when an alleged time traveler tells you not to move, you move. And fast. Because I didn't and a second later, I was trapped. A blue tornado whipped up inside the attic, followed by a NASCAR-level vroom. The stench of sulfur stung my nostrils. The bookshelves and walls wavered and shimmied and began to melt like a Dali painting. Electricity shivered over my skin. Under my skin. My feet left the ground and I gaped down in terrified awe as my toes hovered a foot above the floor. Glo tapped the screen again. It was like she flicked the on switch to a giant vacuum cleaner. The library dissolved and my body was sucked into an undulating vortex with a sickening s-p-p-p-lurch. I screamed. I'm dramatic like that. Who wouldn't be, when your atoms were being scrambled into a million pieces? When your stomach felt as if it was being ripped out through your navel? When you're flipped end over end like an out-of-control ride at Six Flags, with certain death imminent? Then…pop! And nothing. Except some birds chirping and a distant rumble, like thunder on the horizon. And me lying dazed and confused in the middle of a dirt road. Still screaming. Now I believed in time travel. Every damn word Glo had said.
